Recently, my family and I had the pleasure of visiting Peru for a mission project and to visit my wife’s family. While we were there, I had the opportunity to sow the seed of Gottman Method Couples Therapy in a land where that seed had not yet been sown and is little known.

On July 21st, I met with the College of Psychologists of Peru in Cusco and gave a presentation on  Gottman Method Couples Therapy. I spoke about the research behind the Gottman Method, the FourHorsemen of the Apocalypse, and the Sound Relationship House Theory. It was a wonderful encounter with colleagues with much interest and many questions. As a result, we are talking with the College of Psychologists and the Psychology Department of the Andean University about the possibility of a Level 1 Clinical Training next year in Cusco.

On July 23rd, I had the opportunity to do a one-day workshop on Gottman Method Couples Therapy with pastoral agents of the Methodist Church of Lima and Callao. I presented the research behind the Gottman Method, the Four Horsemen, the Sound Relationship House Theory, and the “Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.” Again, there was much interest and active participation. One participant wrote afterwards that it was “a good time for learning and acquiring tools for therapeutic action in favor of the family.” Another commented that such therapeutic and pastoral work with couples and families was “urgent and necessary” and that the workshop was “an answer to her prayers.” As a result, we are discussing ways to continue formation in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and couple and family therapy as a whole via the Methodist Church in Peru’s online training forum.
